Liquor Sales Policy

Liquor Sales Policy

Alcoholic beverages may only be listed by authorised sellers who hold a valid liquor licence. Buyers must be at least 18 years of age.

Most types of alcohol can be sold through Buy’t. However, sellers must comply with state and territory legislation relating to alcohol sales (see Helpful links for relevant regulations). It is the seller’s responsibility to ensure they meet all licensing and delivery obligations.

Policy requirements
Alcohol sales are limited to approved sellers*, who must:

  • Hold the correct liquor licence(s) and display the licence number(s) clearly in the listing
  • Make sure listings and products comply with the Alcohol Beverages Advertising Code (ABAC)
  • Offer domestic delivery only, using a service that checks the recipient’s age at the time of delivery
  • Refrain from selling to customers in designated dry zones
  • Include the following statement in their listing description:
Buyers must be at least 18 years of age and must not be located in a designated dry zone to purchase alcohol. For more information about alcohol sales, please see here: buyt.com.au/alcohol-policy
  • Only list collectable alcohol containers if they are empty
  • Follow these rules for selling stills used in distilling alcohol:
    • Any still with a capacity greater than five litres cannot be sold, bought or owned without approval from the Australian Taxation Office
    • Regardless of size, distilling alcohol at home without an excise licence is prohibited

*To request approval to sell Alcohol, please contact Buy’t. You will need to provide your Buy’t username, liquor licence number(s), ABN or ACN, registered business name and website. Approval will be granted at the sole discretion of Buy’t.

All activity on Buy’t must comply with this policy, the Buy’t User Agreement, relevant laws, and the rights of third parties. Breaches may result in action being taken, such as removing a listing, issuing warnings, restricting account features or suspending an account.

Additional information
When purchasing items featuring Alcohol products, buyers are asked to provide their date of birth at checkout. Sellers receive confirmation in the order details that the buyer is over 18, but the actual date of birth is not disclosed.

Delivery services must meet state requirements, including verifying the age of the person receiving the package. In certain states, alcohol may only be delivered to the person named on the delivery address, who must be an adult.

Some parts of Australia are classified as ‘dry zones’ where alcohol is restricted or banned. Buy’t may block transactions to these locations, and sellers must not knowingly send alcohol to customers in these zones.
