Bos Indicus Cattle Co is a highly respected Australian Brahman breeding operation, proudly recognised as the “Home of the Classic Brahman.” Established in 1959, the business has developed a strong reputation built on genetic integrity, consistency, and decades of disciplined selective breeding. With deep roots in traditional Brahman bloodlines, the operation reflects a long-standing commitment to producing cattle that perform reliably in Australian conditions.
• The operation is registered with the Australian Brahman Breeders Association and is founded on classic, proven Brahman genetics.
• Generations of careful breeding have shaped cattle that are adaptable, productive, and dependable across a wide range of environments.
The breeding philosophy at Bos Indicus Cattle Co centres on producing cattle that work in real-world production systems. Quiet temperament, fertility, and durability are prioritised to ensure ease of handling, reduced labour requirements, and long-term herd performance. Every breeding decision is made with functionality, efficiency, and longevity in mind.
• Strong herd health and biosecurity practices are consistently maintained.
• Cattle are bred to meet the requirements of both interstate and export markets.
A strong emphasis is placed on maternal performance and reproductive efficiency. Cows are selected for their ability to calve naturally with minimal intervention, raise strong and healthy calves, and maintain consistent productivity throughout their breeding life. This focus ensures herd sustainability and improved lifetime returns for producers.
• Fertility and longevity are core selection traits.
• Structural soundness, balance, and mobility are maintained across all herds.
Bos Indicus Cattle Co operates distinct grey and red Brahman herds, each developed to meet specific breeding objectives while maintaining uniformity and breed character. This structured approach allows the operation to offer cattle with defined strengths to suit different production goals.
• Grey Brahmans: Selected for capacity, length, balance, strong pigment, and calm temperament, with an emphasis on structural correctness and consistency.
• Red Brahmans: Known for strong maternal ability, fertility, sound structure, and the incorporation of polled genetics.
Through careful selection, disciplined herd management, and a commitment to traditional Brahman values, Bos Indicus Cattle Co continues to supply quality Brahman genetics to stud and commercial producers seeking cattle that are functional, reliable, and well suited to Australian beef production systems.

OUR STORY:
(Bos Indicus Cattle Co., n.d.)
“BOS Indicus Cattle Co. was founded in 1959 by Cedric Zischke and is registered as Australian Brahman Breeders Association (ABBA) Membership No. 15 and carries the Prefix BOS which was adjusted in March 2019 from Balara to BOS to correctly reflect our history. The Cherokee stud was founded in 1953 by the late Lionel DeLandelles and recorded as stud No. 3. Jesse Zischke, the Stud Manager and Co-owner oversees the breeding and sales program for both operations. BOS Indicus Cattle Co. operates across two locations in the Brisbane and Lockyer Valleys.
Introducing Brahmans into the Brisbane Valley in the late 1950’s and early 1960’s was almost unheard of. At that time the Brisbane Valley was regarded as exclusively Hereford breeding country. People came from miles to view the Brahmans as they made their way by train to the Brisbane Valley.
Cedric Zischke purchased Cherokee Sioux, his first bull in 1959 as a calf and purchased his first lines of Brahman cows from Waverley Station in the late 1950’s and early 1960’s. In 1961 he acquired additional cows from Belmont Research Centre and Bellevue Station, ex Glenprairie Station. In 1959 we purchased a cow from the direct descedant from the 1933 importation. This female had a tremendous influence on the future of our stud.
Three further bulls were purchased from Lionel DeLandelles, Cherokee Stud in 1961 – Cherokee Pablo, Cherokee Waun and Cherokee Waterloo. Throughout the following decades BOS Indicus Cattle Co. has only ever sourced sires and a small selection of females from the Cherokee bloodlines. All other females are based on our own breeding program. Cedric and Lionel were very dear friends and together they weathered the ups and downs of the beef cattle industry over many decades. Lionel was also a great mentor to Cedric. The Zischke and DeLandelles family relationship continues today with Jesse Zischke’s oversight of the stud and breeding program.
BOS Indicus Cattle Co. began showing cattle in 1961 and continued up until the early 1970’s. Throughout the 1960’s, 1970’s and 1980’s we held our own stud sales as well as selling heifers and bulls at the annual Cherokee sales. Throughout the years bulls have been sold into the northern areas of Townsville and Charters Towers and into the western country of Queensland. In 1981 ten bulls were supplied in a shipment for breeding purposes to Indonesia.
Today we market and sell our females and bulls directly to buyers. Visitors are most welcome, please telephone in advance to ensure our availability.”
