💖 About Me — My Story
I’m Monique — founder of Bad & Boujee Hair, former hairdresser, professional hype-woman, proud Perth mum of two, and a mixed-race English–American girl who always knew she was a little bit different.
From as early as I can remember, my hair was different. To get the same results as my friends, it took double the time, double the effort, and double the price. From the classic clothes iron + tea towel combo (“Mum, you’re burning me!”) to endless rollers and dryers… I thought I had found the solution in a hairdressing apprenticeship. Instead, I learnt how to make everyone else’s hair look beautiful while spending a fortune and wrecking my own.
Then life shifted — I became a mum. The hours I once spent styling my hair disappeared. My options? Pay for a sitter, spend four hours in the salon, lose half my pay cheque (double these days!)… and still wake up to straighten it again. Or I could order cheap online pieces that barely lasted one wear. Or I could just rock the mum bun, because I didn’t have the time or budget — but with that, I slowly lost my confidence too.
And then it hit me: so many other women were stuck in the same option three.
That’s when I found the middle ground — the solution. I started small at the markets, selling ponytails. I watched women’s confidence return instantly with each install. That energy, that smile, that posture shift — it’s what drove me to keep going. To give women their power of choice back. The power to feel good without guilt, especially when you’re a mum.
In 2023, I jumped in solo — no experience, no backup plan, just a whole lot of character, hustle, and emotions. And here I am: still learning, still building, still addicted to the way these products make women feel about themselves.
